A Secret Language in Bloom
Long before text messages and emojis, flowers carried messages of their own.
During the Victorian era (1837–1901), social customs often made it difficult to express emotions openly. Instead, people exchanged carefully chosen flowers to communicate feelings that were better left unspoken. This symbolic language became known as floriography.
A bouquet could express affection, gratitude, encouragement, remembrance, or hope—simply through the flowers it contained.
How It Was Used
Victorians exchanged small bouquets known as tussie-mussies, carefully arranging flowers whose meanings were understood by the recipient.
Flower dictionaries became surprisingly popular, assigning symbolism to hundreds of blooms. A red hibiscus represented passion. Cornflowers spoke of remembrance. Violets symbolized modesty, while calendula offered comfort and warmth.
Even the way a bouquet was held or presented could subtly change its meaning.
Although meanings sometimes varied between books, the idea remained the same: flowers could communicate what words sometimes could not.
